Info for Lake Managers

Stay In Touch

During the active recreation season, KDHE maintains an email list and hosts a weekly "status update" conference call for lake managers. If you are a government employee or other professional responsible for managing a public waterbody, please contact us to be added to our email distribution and conference call list.

Resources

You can conduct preliminary tests to determine whether you have a HAB, as shown in the jar/stick test demonstration (PDF).

If you wish to report a suspected bloom, take photos if possible, and submit an algae bloom report. You can expedite the processing of your report by having site photos and jar test photos ready to send to KDHE.

If a HAB appears likely, we may send a crew to sample your waterbody or ask you to submit samples to KDHE. For more information please view sampling instructions (WMV). Note that waterbodies serving as Public Water Supply sources may have additional special requirements for sampling.

Educational Publications

Please educate your visitors about HABs. You may wish to develop your own materials, or you may use ours:

Educational Signage

Signage for Lake Advisories

If your lake is placed on an advisory (watch, warning, or closure), you may need to generate signage. The following are some examples of signage that can be posted at kiosks, beaches, and boat docks.
