Curriculum & Implementation
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's (KDHE) Bureau of Family Health, in partnership with the March of Dimes (MOD), utilizes the Becoming a Mom®/Comenzando Bien® evidence-based prenatal education curriculum at the center of its collaborative approach to delivering comprehensive prenatal education and support in Kansas. The Becoming a Mom (PDF) / Comenzando Bien (PDF) curriculum by the March of Dimes can be accessed online for your review.
In Kansas, the original March of Dimes curriculum has been supplemented with additional handouts addressing Title V priority areas such as breastfeeding, safe sleep, newborn safety, early childhood development topics, preterm birth, inter-conception health, etc. See the Becoming a Mom Curriculum Table of Contents (PDF) for a comprehensive list of handout titles included in the Kansas model. The curriculum is reviewed on an annual basis and updated as needed and upon the availability of curriculum updates provided by MOD.
Readiness Survey
After reviewing all the resources on this website, if your community is interested in implementing the Becoming a Mom curriculum, complete and submit the Readiness Survey and Memorandum of Understanding. This information will assist us to better meet your needs, by providing important information about community's interest and readiness to implement initiatives targeted at improving Maternal and Child Health outcomes.
Memorandum of Understanding
Once you have reviewed the resources and have decided to move forward with the implementation of the Kansas Perinatal Community Collaborative model of the March of Dimes Becoming a Mom curriculum, you will need to have your lead agency sign and submit the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). While not a legally binding agreement, this MOU provides your agency's commitment to implementing the model and curriculum per the Kansas design as described.
KDHE and MOD have worked together to provide clear guidelines for the implementation of this expanded curriculum in Kansas. For access to these guidelines, the comprehensive curriculum handouts utilized by the Kansas Model, session PowerPoints, Lesson Plans, Activity Plans, and many other essential resources, complete the Memorandum of Understanding (PDF) required for program implementation. Submit Memorandum of Understanding via email.
Upon receipt and review of this MOU, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment may provide your agency with access to all implementation resources developed to support your community with implementation. We appreciate your partnership and adherence to the MOU requirements that support program fidelity across the state of Kansas.
