Surface Mining Unit

The Surface Mining Unit of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Environmental Remediation consists of three basic programs: 

  • Administration and Enforcement (A&E) Program is responsible for the issuance of new coal mining permits, the inspection of active permitted coal mines, and the enforcement of all regulations pertaining to active coal mining operations; 

  • Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program reclaims coal mines abandoned prior to the passage of Place 95-87; 

  • Emergency Program abates coal mining-related hazards that have an immediate and imminent impact on the health and safety of the public.

Stay Out & Stay Alive Video

The Bureau of Land Management-Utah, the Utah Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program, and the Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program have cooperatively produced the Stay Out & Stay Alive video as an educational tool to show the dangers associated with abandoned mines.
