Underground Hydrocarbon Storage Program

The Underground Hydrocarbon Storage (UHS) program regulates the storage of natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPGs), and liquid hydrocarbons in underground caverns developed in the Hutchinson Salt Member of the Wellington Formation. There are 9 active storage facilities, 368 active status storage wells and caverns with a storage capacity of ~73 million barrels, and 49 brine ponds. To learn more about the UHS program and the geology of the area and cavern development, review the Underground Hydrocarbon Storage Program Overview (PDF).
