BRFSS Background, Accessing the BRFSS Website, and Recent Findings
Background information is given on BRFSS, including the history of BRFSS, who is eligible to be contacted to participate, response collection goals, modules and survey arms, and callback surveys. The official Kansas BRFSS homepage is explored to showcase where information and reports can be found.
The Key Resources tab is highlighted, and the annual reports section is explored in greater detail. A section by section review of the BRFSS 2018 Annual Report is given to explain how the report is organized from beginning to end. Statistical terminology such as weighted data and confidence intervals are explained. Symbology for BRFSS tables and graphs is also discussed.
Survey Crosswalk and Previous Years’ Tables
The Survey Crosswalk resource is explained. The Previous Year’s Tables section is explored in further detail. A section by section review of the 2019 Question, Crosstabulation, and Index Tables Report is given to explain how the report is organized from beginning to end. Statistical terminology such as frequency, standard error, and crosstabulations are explained. The difference between NCHS and population density within the crosstabulation tables is also discussed.
County, Regional and State Fact Sheets; Public Health Preparedness Regions Map
Types of county fact sheets available are explored, and sample size limitations of county data are discussed. An explanation of Public Health Preparedness Regions is given while viewing the PDF containing.
County, Regional, and Special Reports
A section by section review of the 2017 Shawnee County BRFSS Report is showcased to explain how the report is organized from beginning to end. Regional and State Reports are also highlighted. The use of regional data when county data are not available is mentioned. Symbology indicating limitations in the data due to sample size is discussed.
A review of the 2019 BRFSS questionnaire is given to explain how the survey is conducted. The presenter explains step by step what a surveyor would ask, how they would determine which question to ask next, and how to respond to questions asked by survey participants in an example question.
Local Data InstantAtlas and Technical Notes
Locating BRFSS Technical Notes, the About InstantAtlas, and InstantAtlas Help sections are highlighted. Next, the Local Data InstantAtlas dashboard is accessed. Step-by-step instructions are given related to selecting the data topic, changing the geography selection, changing the year selection, understanding the difference in colors on the map and tables, and comparing data and trends.
