Vaping ECHO Success Stories
All participating schools shared an area of succces in one of the five following areas.
We have selected these with the intention that in sharing them that they will inspire and encourage you to keep striving towards your goals, and keep you believing that achieving change is possible.
Discipline Alternatives - Andover High
We have provided students with an opportunity to reduced their out of school suspension of three days for possession of nicotine to one day if they complete the Aspire Tobacco Education online program. We have followed up with students in order to gather feedback on the time spent to complete the course, if they found it beneficial, and their overall thoughts.
Feedback has been positive and it appears to be something we can implement.
RESIST - Reno Valley Middle School
One success we have had is that we have started a Resist chapter at Reno Valley Middle School. As we were visiting with some students about possible starting a chapter, we had seven students step up to start the program. The team has already had two meetings and is already planning what activities they will start with next semester.
We are also excited that the two elementary schools in our district want our Resist team to come present to their students.

Parent Involvement - Garden City Achieve
We had a student in our building who has been caught twice this year with a THC vape. Rather than just out of school suspending him, we chose to do a combination of out of school suspension and then in school suspension with him and his parents agreeing to speak with the multi-disciplinary team through the county. He has expressed wanting to quit and we are providing those resources and support for him and his family.
We also have held an anti-vaping summit where students were shown the various aspects of vaping, the harm of vaping, and the legal side of it all so that they are more informed about the impact of their decisions.
Teamwork - Shawnee Mission North
Our success at SMN pertains to identifying the need for a strong vaping cessation program at our school. Our team came to each meeting with plans or ideas for how to get this project started. We are looking forward to how our team will roll out our cessation plan.

Reporting - Kepley Middle School
We have found success by focusing on: If you See Something, Hear Something, or Know Something... SAY SOMETHING! We have received numerous "anonymous" tips from students via emails. Students are able to hide their reporting from the detection of their peers and not be subjected to being called a snitch. Reporting keeps people safe!
We have also felt success because we are now aware of services available to our rural community in an effort to educate and change the lives of our students and community in a positive manner.
