School-Based Funded Prevention Strategies

Second Step

To decrease violence and help children build social emotional competence, we partners with schools (17 in 2021-2022 school year chosen through review of data and indicators from Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey) to implement the Committee for Children’s (CFC) Second Step Program, an evidence-based social emotional learning program with a bullying prevention unit.

The Second Step Program addresses building social emotional competence from a social ecological perspective by delivering a classroom-based curriculum. The CFC curricula is incorporated as a part of regular education program and is taught by the school staff to all students in these grades.

When implemented with fidelity, Second Step can:

  • Increase social emotional competence in youth,
  • Decrease the acceptability of violence, increase empathy,
  • Increase school and community connectedness,
  • Increase academic achievement.

Students participate in a survey in the fall and spring with each school receiving a report that provides the results of analysis of changes in key student behaviors, perceptions and attitudes and other factors related to bullying in schools, such as trust, bullying behavior, and bystander behavior.

Program funded schools are also required to review and revise their school bullying policy to meet best practice standards.

Coaching Boys Into Men and Athletes As Leaders

Beginning in the 2022, SVPE is providing support to Jana’s Campaign to champion implementation of Coaching Boys Into Men, an evidence-based prevention program that trains and motivates high school coaches to teach their young male athletes healthy relationship skills and that violence never equals strength. Athletes As Leaders (AAL) is the complimentary program for high school athletes on girls’ sports teams. AAL aims to empower youth to take an active role in challenging stereotypes, promoting healthy relationships and creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.
