The Nutrition Education

Lori Fortin, RD, LD, CLC | Riley County | Lori graduated from Kansas State University. She has two grown daughters and has worked with WIC since 1997... and she LOVES it! Lori believes that nutrition education is so important for young families but that we need to make it easy to understand. She recognizes that families are busy, so she likes to make educational materials quick to read and with fun pictures and graphics and enhance learning. |
Angela Humburg, MS, RDN, LD | Northeast Kansas | Angela began consulting for WIC in Northeast Kansas in 1999. At that time, teaching nutrition education and breastfeeding to clients coincided with her first years of parenting her six children. She earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from KSU and KU in dietetics and is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. Angela also teaches Nutrition and Mindful Eating at Benedictine College. She continues to grow her brand, Becoming a Diet Renegade, empowering others to break free from diet culture. |
Lynn Kasper, MS, RD, LD | North Central Kansas | Lynn graduated from KSU with a Vocational Home economics degree in Dec. 1974. In May of 1976 she received her master's in vocational adult education. After 14 years of teaching Lynn returned to school to complete class necessary for the 960 hours of coordinated supervised dietetic training. During her 30 plus years of consulting, her heart was always drawn to county or community health and school's nutrition programs. Her original degree keeps her grounded to education and counseling. She enjoys assisting clients set their nutritional goals and help them develop the plan to reach these goals. |
Alicia Ramey, MS, RDN, LD, IBCLC | Cowley County; South Central Kansas Coalition of Public Health | Alicia received her undergraduate degree in dietetics from College of the Ozarks in Branson, MO and master's degree in adult education from K-State. Alicia has been an IBCLC since 2004. Alicia has been with the Kansas WIC program since 1996; beginning in Sedgewick County and serving Cowley County WIC Program as the nutrition services coordinator (NSC) since 2011 and the current designated breastfeeding expert (DBE); Alicia also works with the South Central Kansas Coalition of Public Health (SKCPH; which encompasses 9 different rural counties in south central Kansas) serving both as NSC and DBE. One of Alicia's biggest rewards with the WIC program has been the joy of seeing a "spark" in a parent's eye as they finally "get it." Whether it be the "mother/baby dance" related to breastfeeding or that "ah-ha" moment with a caregiver when it all seems to make sense... those are the moments that make the 26 years with WIC worth it all. |
Aubrey Maggard, RDN, LD | Leavenworth County | Aubrey is the nutrition education coordinator at Leavenworth County WIC as well as a registered dietitian. This is her third year working at the WIC office, and she loves it! She grew up moving around due to having a parent in the army before settling in Kansas. She graduated from Kansas State University in December of 2020 with a BS in nutrition and dietetics before finding a job in the same town she calls her hometown, She is currently pursuing a MS in psychology with an emphasis in child and adolescent developmental psychology. Working with kids is a lifelong passion for her. She is so excited to be a part of the Nutrition Education Committee and work with an organization like WIC! |
Tracy Sabo, MS, RD, LD | Geary County-Konza Prarie | Tracy is the Konza Prarie Community Health Centers WIC coordinator. She has been in the position since 2019 and has been associated with Kansas WIC since 2013 as a coordinator or dietitian serving Geary County. Konza WIC is operated by a Federally Qualified Health Center and allows clients to access WIC services at the same location as medical, dental, behavior health, or other social services. This unique location has increased WIC access and connections to other services. As a dietitian, Tracy performs other duties outside WIC to ensure access to nutrition services for all. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, gardening, hiking, spending time with family, and finding fun and laughter in normal everyday things. |
Alicia Shoemaker, RD, LD, CBS | Crawford County | Alicia is a registered dietitian currently working for WIC in Pittsburg, KS. She has been a registered dietitian for nearly 20 years and has had the privilege of working in many different fields of nutrition: Cardiac, diabetic management, pulmonary, and renal. With her newest adventure of working with women, infants, and children starting in 2020. Since working for WIC she has found a passion for promoting breastfeeding, which she herself did with both of her children. She since has become a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, with the goal of becoming an IBCLC. |
Nydia Smith, MS, RDN, LD | Johnson County | Nydia has been a registered dietitian at WIC since 2018. She obtained a master's degree in clinical nutrition from KU in 2018. She was on the WIC program as a child and feels very fortunate to be able to work with the WIC program as a professional and give back to her Latinx community. Nydia strives to make the WIC program in Kansas more equitable and progress, especially when it comes to Spanish-speaking families. One day she will retire next to the beach with mango and avocado trees in her backyard! |
Chelsie Todd Deneault, MPH, RD, LD | Johnson County | Chelsie has been a WIC dietitian since 2018 and enjoys caring for families as they achieve their health goals. She received her BS in medical dietetics from the University of Missouri in 2016 and her MPH in public health nutrition from the University of Minnesota in 2018, and she has always been passionate about maternal and child well-being. Her interest areas include teaching clients to prepare fruits and vegetables in creative ways and supporting parents for the duration of their breastfeeding experience. When not at work, Chelsie enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and traveling. |
